Study in the public Sector

If you’re working in any part of the public sector, the smartest move for your career is to study to become a Chartered Accountant, Ireland’s leading accountancy qualification.  Remember, you don’t have to be in a training contract. It’s a common misconception that Chartered training is all about getting a contract in an accountancy practice. In fact, over 1,000 of our Chartered students are now training in business, financial services, retail and the public service, and there is a strong tradition of Chartered Accountants training in all areas of the public service, both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

With our new flexible training routes, distance learning and flexible payment options, if you’re considering an accountancy qualification you should look at Chartered first.

What you need to know

  • There’s no training contract required – study via our Flexible Route
  • No need to get audit experience
  • Spread out your exam sittings
  • New distance learning and a choice of timetable options
  • Ask about our instalment payment plan

Flexible Option

Our Flexible Option is just that – flexible and designed with you the student in mind. It means you can enrol into the programme and stay in your current role, and you don’t need to enter into a training contract with your employer at any stage.  You can spread out the number of subjects and exams over different sittings, even consecutive years.  And you have a choice on whether to attend lectures or enrol into the new Distance Learning programme. If you’re not working in a finance role right now, that’s fine, you can gain some relevant experience at a later date.

Trainees have a period of eight years to complete their studies, and prior professional work experience can be recognised.  Audit and tax experience are not compulsory, and you won’t need to spend any time working in practice.

Some public sector employers offer Training contracts that are very similar to those offered in practice, with the added advantage that the training will provide experience relevant to the public sector.
